(ANSA) - ROME, MAR 12 - Italy never leaves any endangered
migrant at sea without a rescue effort, Foreign Minister Antonio
Tajani said Sunday after Alarm Phone accused Rome of
deliberately delaying a rescue of a boatload of 47 migrants
drifting off Libya, many of whom are feared to have dronwned
when their dinghy capsized.
''We must never instrumentalise what happens", said Deputy Prime
Minister and Foreign Minister Tajani, speaking to journalists
before a Leonardo aerospace giant conference in Tel Aviv, where
he is on a State visit.
''I am convinced, knowing the Coast Guard, the Italian Navy and
the Guardia di finanza (tax police), that these men of the sea
never leave anyone without rescue''.
The minister added that he believed that ''we must always make a
real analysis of what happens and never instrumentalise because
we are talking about human lives''.
"We are all committed to preventing these tragedies in the
Mediterranean,'' he concluded. (ANSA).
