(ANSA) - ROME, MAR 11 - Premier Giorgia Meloni's office at
Palazzo Chigi in Rome said Saturday a letter sent by European
Council President Charles Michel pledging cooperation in
combatting migrant traffickers such as those involved in the
February 26 migrant disaster at Cutro in Calabria was in full
harmony with Italian government action.
"Palazzo Chigi expresses its heartfelt appreciation for the
words addressed to Italy by the President of the European
Council, Charles Michel. What President Michel said is fully in
line with the Italian government's action in Europe aimed at
better managing migration and combating migrant smuggling," said
the note on the letter sent to Meloni, in which Michel said that
"working together and with determination we must prevent these
tragedies", like the one at Cutro that has claimed 74 lives so
far with 25-30 still missing and unaccounted for.
The premier's office note added: "After the terrible tragedy of
Cutro, the common commitment to an adequate European response to
the complex phenomenon of migration makes the implementation of
what was decided at the European Council in February even more
urgent". (ANSA).
