(ANSA) - ROME, JAN 9 - The European and global economic
situation is uncertain and the EU's lead is essential, Economy
Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti said after talks in Rome Monday
with Eurogroup President Paschal Donohoe.
"I am happy about Paschal's visit to Rome. In a European and
global context characterised by a high degree of uncertainty, we
continue to support citizens and businesses affected by high
energy prices", Giorgetti said.
"Economic growth and sound public finances are at the heart of
the Italian government's action, also by increasing investments
and implementing reforms. In this context, we believe that
effective coordination and joint actions at the European level
are essential".
Donohoe said he was convinced that progress would be made on
ratifying the reformed EU bailout fund, the European Stability
Mechanism (ESM), even though Italy has so far said it will not
ratify it.
"We negotiate agreements with the good faith that all parties
respect their commitments. This trust is fundamental for the
functioning of the EU'. In a very difficult" situation, every
"step to strengthen the Economic and monetary union sends a
strong signal".
"(I am) convinced that we will be able to make progress in the
ratification and implementation of the European Stability
Mechanism (ESM)".
It is a "fundamental" reform that "gives us more common tools to
deal with crises". (ANSA).
