(ANSA) - ROME, MAR 23 - AC Milan have told the council that
they want to build their own stadium in the La Maura area of the
city, rather than going ahead with a joint project with local
rivals Inter to construct a new ground in the area of the teams'
current home at San Siro, Mayor Giuseppe Sala said Thursday.
"Milan confirmed their desire to procedure with La Maura," Sala
said after a meeting with club officials, referring to an area
that is home to a harness-racing track and is not far from San
Siro.
"Being as we have a formal discussion open on the hypothesis of
a stadium near to San Siro, what I asked is that, if they do not
intend to proceed (with the San Siro project), they should
formally say so.
"I told them that I have taken note of their interest (in the La
Maura site) but what is needed is a project".
He said the club told him that they will get back to him in two
weeks with the outline of a new project.
With Milan looking set to go it alone, Inter have reportedly got
a plan B ready by identifying a site near the city, between the
towns of Assago and Rozzano, as an area where they could build a
new ground.
This would be near to the Assago Forum that is home to the
Olimpia Milano basketball team.
In which case the iconic San Siro would be saved from demolition
but would be without a tenant. (ANSA).
