(ANSA) - ROME, MAR 23 - Democratic Party (PD) leader Elly
Schlein said the Italian government was not approaching the
European Union in the right way when it comes to the issue of
managing the increasingly numbers of migrants and refugees
arriving in Italy via sea.
"The Italian government... is not on the right road because it
is putting the wrong questions to the EU," Schlein said on the
sidelines of the pre-EU summit meeting of the Socialists and
Democrats (S&D) group in Brussels.
"It should ask for more sharing of the responsibility of the
reception (of migrants and refugees), going beyond the Dublin
Regulation (on handling asylum claims), and obtaining a European
search-and-rescue at sea mission.
"Unfortunately we still see tragedies taking place where the
vessels of the (Italian) Coast Guard and the NGOs don't get to".
